Day 34 - Grand Canyon, Vermilion Cliffs and Flagstaff, Arizona

A little cloudy today, but what a stupendous day. I still can't believe how big this country is, and the pictures don't really do justice to the vastness of the chasm, the sky, the cliffs ... I just couldn't stop clicking away all day. Luckily for me, there were very few people at the North Rim, so most of the trails and vista points were empty of others, and so peaceful - I must come back again. There were mule deer wandering around the visitor centre and the cabins, though they were pretty shy of humans.

After the North Rim, I drove back all the way through the Kaibab Forest to Jacob Lake (stopping so as not to run over cows wandering across the road, and also some wild turkeys) for a much-needed cup of coffee, then all the way down the 89A past the wonderful Vermilion Cliffs just as the sun was setting. The road goes north-east between the cliffs and the Colorado River, then over the Navajo Bridge and back south-west down the other side of the river, which seemed awfully small and far away - but I guess that's just a matter of scale! Now staying at the Super 8 at Flagstaff, thinking about where to go tomorrow.
