It took about an hour, but I eventually got my rental car - this time I have a metallic blue Pontiac G6 - very pretty! Set off north along the Lake Michigan Circle Tour, through the very leafy suburbs of Chicago and satellite towns. Unfortunately you can't see much of the lake most of the time, just tantalising glimpses down private roads ...
There are some very pretty small harbour towns along this route, mostly with lighthouses, such as Kenosha, Racine and Port Washington, but it's very slow going. Occasionally the route diverts slightly inland onto I-43, which is much quicker but with less to see. However, the landscape at this time of year is lovely; there is a profusion of purple and blue wild flowers in the marshland between the road an the lake, the trees are just starting to turn golden, and the sky looked for all the world like the opening credits of The Simpsons!
I diverted up the Door Peninsula to Sturgeon Bay, a sweet little town, if a little chintzy. Sadly at the moment most of the roads in the centre are being dug up, so there were many diversions and nowhere to park, so I couldn't really walk around as I had planned.
On to Green Bay, to stay the night at Motel 6, just around the corner from the hospital - the restaurant where I had dinner seemed to be full of patients, who were mostly cheerful about their ailments (though there's only so much chatter about illness one can take while eating dinner ...). Where shall I end up tomorrow?
