Today was a driving day! Drove west on US-58 across the south of Virginia, wondering what the white fluffy stuff growing in the fields was - until I realised it was cotton! Hadn't expected to see it this far north, but with the temperature in the high 80s F (27 DegC) most of the day, I guess it makes sense. As I got into North Carolina, there were fields of tobacco as well as cotton and some soybeans. Took NC 48 and US 301 south instead of the I-95, making my way through lots of little towns rather than the tree-lined and anonymous interstate: Emporia (looking a little down-at-heel, with many empty storefronts on Main Street); Gastonia (very pretty, lots of attractive colonial-style mansions); Roanoake Rapids (couldn't see the rapids, but a big paper processing mill was right on the river); and Rocky Mount (a railroad centre of old, and still a hub for train lines, and the birthplace of Thelonius Monk).
So here I am in Fayetteville, the historic district of which is very attractive! It's also a very military town, with Fort Bragg just down the road.
