Spent the morning in Memphis, on a bus tour around the various blues and rock'n'roll and other historical sites in the city, including Sun Studio, where Elvis made his first commercial recording; Beale Street, where all the blues dives are, and the Gibson Guitar Factory; also the Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King was assassinated (now the National Civil Rights Museum). Photos tomorrow! Then wandered around the Cotton Museum, in the old Cotton Exchange; there is also a good deal of information there about the history of the blues.
A 200-mile drive on the I-40 took me to Nashville, where I am staying with the wonderful Nancy Lorenzi for the weekend. After a restoring cup of Earl Grey, and an excellent dinner in the neighbourhood at Firefly, we headed down to the Station Inn, an unprepossessing building to say the least. However, inside we saw Off the Wagon, a terrific bluegrass band - they played at least half-an-hour more than scheduled, which was great for us - I think they were having a lot of fun too!
