Another gorgeous sunny day (though still chilly - didn't get above 60 degF all day); it was hard to leave Nashville after having such a wonderful weekend with Nancy, but I have places to go, people to meet!
Heading more or less east, I only spent about 20 minutes on the interstate before taking scenic byways, through the beautiful countryside of Middle and Eastern Tennessee. Gently rolling hills, with trees and meadows with cows and horses grazing, gradually gave way to steeper forested ridges and hills, crossing the Caney Fork River several times, and also the Tennessee River at Watts Bar Dam.
Maryville is a pretty town, with several attractive churches, all in different styles. The road (US 321E) then became really steep and twisty, winding through the forest to Kinzel Springs and through Wears Valley, into Pigeon Forge, which is a major tourist resort on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
In many places, the Appalachians form ridges that run south-west to north-east, and this is very apparent when looking at Google Earth all the way from Georgia to Pennsylvania; I drove over the northern ridges back on Day 28!
