After a cloudy start, the weather was absolutely gorgeous, especially near the coast, which was lucky, as that was my travel plan for the day. I avoided the interstate, and headed down US 17, with a few side excursions towards the ocean, though that is not easy here, because of the marshy, swampy coastline. Different roadkill down here too: today I saw several armadilloes (a problem for the scavengers!), a couple of possums, a small red fox, and a small deer. Alongside the road in most places is a deep and very wet ditch - though I saw no alligators I'm sure there were some in there. Lovely to watch the reflections play across the surface of the swamps between the grass stems waving in the sunshine.
I stopped off at
Savannah for a walk around the old part of town - even prettier than Charleston, with a
cathedral not dissimilar from a wedding cake! Many very elegant houses, and all the streets are lined with live oaks full of spanish moss, which makes for a cool and shady environment. Savannah has a
bridge across one of the many rivers very like the one in Charleston mentioned yesterday.
Back o

n the road, and lots of meandering off the road onto little sandy tracks through the swamp leading to tiny fishing harbours (with obligatory crab shack). Found my way across yet another
suspension bridge and a causeway to
Jekyll Island, which would be a perfect place for a holiday - beaches, trails (both coastal and forest), fishing, boating, hang-gliding, history, restaurants ...
And then to my Motel 6 in
Brunswick, which I will look at tomorrow on my way out of town. Dinner at
Captain Joe's seafood diner across the street: here I had my first (and probably only) experience of
hushpuppies, which were not mentioned on the menu but just came with my fried grouper and onion rings! Excellent salad bar, though.
I will be staying with friends for the next 2 nights, so might not post anything for a couple of days!
