Snow snow snow ... well, I guess it is December in the Midwest, so I shouldn't be surprised! Have been loafing around watching old movies, catching up on reading, etc., but we spent the whole afternoon at the Art Institute a couple of days ago seeing The Divine Art tapestry exhibition. The collection has not been on view for several years, as it was undergoing conservation and restoration in Belgium, and it's stunning. I'm not particularly fond of the 18th century formal / Greek myth / martial / pastoral tapestries, but the medieval and early Renaissance works are wonderful. I was especially taken with a relatively small work from the Netherlands of the infant Christ pressing the wine of the Eucharist - this is a subject I have not seen in any painting, sculpture or tapestry before: it seemed very fresh and original. The most modern piece in this exhibition is Pomona by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, beautifully executed in this medium.
