Wow, we had a busy day yesterday! Spent most of the morning at El Mundo department store - like an enormous jumble sale of designer clothes at insane prices. I ended up with 2 pairs of trousers (pants to my American friends), 3 tops, and a pair of shorts for $69!
Back to Melinda's for lunch - superfast burritos! Then out for some culture; first to MoMA (free after 4 p.m. on Friday), where we enjoyed both the art and the clientele - I love peoplewatching. Favourite picture of the day - hard to say with so many wonderful Picassos, Cezannes, Gauguins, Giacomettis, Seurats, etc., but I think it has to be Matisse's Dance I. But I also loved Diego Rivera's Agrarian Leader Zapata, which had a somewhat mediaeval tapestry feel about the horse and the shrubbery on the right ... There was also a great special exhibition on Ron Arad's work; I wanted to sit in all the chairs!
After this, we needed food to sustain us through the evening, so we headed for a classic New York deli - Stage, on 45th and 7th - where between us we demolished a classic martini, a bowl of borscht, a Tiger Woods Reuben (hot pastrami, sauerkraut and swiss on rye), a "small" piece of New York cheesecake, and 2 coffees! The maitre d' sounded just like Billy Crystal!
Suitably fortified, we arrived at the Minskoff Theatre, a lovely Art Deco space, to see The Lion King. What a fabulous show! Spine-tingling singing (especially the African numbers), great choreography, costumes and drama. Highly recommended!
