Saturday in New York, what to do? So many choices! Melinda was working, so I took myself off to Zabar's for a late breakfast of bagel and lox, and peoplewatched in the process; there was a block party being set up just outside the window - fun to watch all the kids looking at the bouncy castle and hoping they could get onto it! Then across Broadway to Filene's Basement, where the style is completely different from Boston! Many more high fashion labels (and prices to match), but I did snag a beautiful sweater for $40 down from $198!
OK, time for some culture - I thought "I'll just walk across the park" - and then the heavens opened! I spent a little while hopping from stall to stall at the art and craft market on Columbus, but was getting very wet. So a quick lunch across the street at Cafe Frida, where they make your guacamole to order right in front of you. After 40 minutes the rain was still heavy, so grabbed a cab and arrived at the Guggenheim in style. It took me 30 minutes to get a ticket (everyone else had the same idea in the rain ...), but it was worth the wait! A wonderful Kandinsky exhibition from bottom to top of the spiral, chronologically displayed, showing his progression to the abstract, his themes, and the changes in his colour palette over time. Too many great pictures to have a favourite, but you can look for yourself here.
Time for a rest to absorb the afternoon's activities! Then dinner in the neighbourhood, at AquaMarina, an Italian family restaurant - where I had seafood lasagna, excellent! Then we headed back to the southern edge of Harlem, to Smoke, my favourite jazz joint, where we had the best seats in the house, thanks to Dave Kaufman who is a regular there! We saw the David Hazeltine Quartet (David Hazeltine - piano, Louis Hayes - drums, John Webber - bass, and Eric Alexander - tenor sax). I was sitting right by the piano, with a great view of the keyboard!
